The Heidelberg Great Train Race – 2021

On Friday 24 September 2021, Die SuikerbosRant in association with Protek SA, Infinity, Roxsure and ROVOS Rail presented the third consecutive Heidelberg Great Train Race.  This event celebrates the nostalgia of transport through the ages on the road, on the track and in the air.

The variety was ageless

Visitors got to see these three modes of transport come together as the familiar whistle of the ROVOS Rail locomotive steamed into the Heidelberg Railway Station. Although the timing is seldom on the money, the show remained spectacular and was enjoyed by nearly 2000 spectators.

The Great Train Race draws many visitors from all over South Africa

This 3rd HGTR welcomed visitors from as far as Tzaneen and Cape Town. The anticipation was on a knifes edge as the aeroplanes accompanying the train stared to appear on the horizon. It was bliss and most enjoyable, one spectator added!

Here are some numbers:

235 cars ranging from 1915 till some modern sports and collectable motorcars.

75 motorcycles with the oldest a 1909 Durkopp 500cc

86 aeroplanes and one stream train.

Brandon Jarvis from Johannesburg rode on the oldest motorcycle – 1909 Durkopp 500cc

Although the COVID pandemic dictated event numbers and participation in 2021, it is the wish of the organisers to open the gates to the airfield in 2022 so that we can finally welcome all our visitors to the full spectacle of this epic event in Heidelberg.

Watch this space, oh and the road and the tracks!
